Taipei, Feb. 17 (CNA) The worldwide information and communications technology (ICT) sector should find a new growth driver in 2014 in view of the slowdown in sales of smartphone and tablet computers, a local research center said Monday. "2014 can be a turning point for the ICT sector," said Chi Chao-yin, a researcher at Taiwan Industrial Economics and Knowledge Research Center (IEK). The industry will see more innovative applications and more integrated services as the wearable device market grows and becomes more competitive, she told reporters. Some 31.7 million wearable devices will be shipped worldwide this year and the number will reach 190 million units by 2018, according to the IEK under the government-sponsored Industrial Technology Research Institute. Google Inc.'s Glass and the rumored iWatch from Apple Inc. will be the focus of the industry this year, the center forecast. It said there have not been any "killer applications" yet and that applications will still be confined to fitness and health and accessories for smartphones. IEK General Director Stephen Su also said at the press briefing that the era of "smart everywhere" has arrived, with everything to be connected to the Internet anytime and anywhere. The ICT sector is now shifting its focus to developing devices and technologies that have high stability, low power consumption and are suitable for any platform and environment, he added.
