Manila, Jan. 18 (CNA) Despite a row with the Philippines over a fishing boat incident last May, Taiwan was the third largest contributor to tourism on the Philippine island of Boracay in 2013, according to data from tourism authorities in the neighboring country. The number of Taiwanese visitors to the holiday hotspot was 39,706 last year, the third highest among all countries, although there was a 33 percent drop in tourist arrivals from Taiwan in the months following the May incident. South Korea was the No. 1 source of tourists to Boracay, with 208,665 visitors, followed by China with 200,794. Taiwan-Philippines relations frayed last year after a Taiwanese fisherman was shot dead by Philippine coast guard patrol personnel on May 9 in an overlapping exclusive economic zone of the two countries. Taiwan subsequently imposed a series of sanctions against the Philippines, including a red alert discouraging travel to the country. The island of Boracay recorded more than 1.36 million visitor arrivals last year, up nearly 12 percent from the previous year, according to the Philippine Department of Tourism.
