RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) -- Selva the surfer wore a lime-green life vest, but her dozen colleagues braved the waters without protection. All could at least doggie paddle if they fell off their boards.

About a dozen four-legged practitioners of stand-up paddle boarding took to the waves with their human owners Thursday off Rio de Janeiro's Barra Beach. It was practice for a second annual competition involving canine-human teams.

Marco Sarnelli says he organized the event because he couldn't stand to leave his dog tied up on the beach while he paddle-boarded.
