Taipei, Oct. 23 (CNA) The first-ever concert held by Taiwan's Ten Drum Art Percussion Group in the Middle East attracted an audience of hundreds from around the world Tuesday at the Global Village festival in Dubai, a city in the United Arab Emirates. The Ten Drum Group, which was shortlisted for Best Traditional World Music Album for the 2010 Grammy Awards, performed with traditional Chinese instruments, including drums, bamboo flutes in two concerts, as part of the country's annual tourism festival. Chang Wang-lu, director-general of the Commercial Office of the Republic of China in Dubai, who helped organize the troupe's appearance, said he hopes Taiwan's art and music can shine on the international stage. "It was an unforgettable night," said one Taiwanese audience member, a 40-year Dubai resident who told the group that the concert reminded him of home. The Global Village, the largest cultural extravaganza in the region, offers visitors an array of festivals, shopping and entertainment in an open-air theme park. Now in its 17th year, the festival, which will run through March next year, has 70 participating countries presented in 36 pavilions. Ten Drum was founded in 2000 by troupe leader Hsieh Shi to advance Taiwan's drum culture and has staged more than 5,000 shows in 18 countries, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
