MILAN (AP) -- The European auto industry may be showing getting some relief from the slowdown in sales.

The European automakers' association, based in Brussels, said Wednesday that new car registrations in September were up 5.4 percent. That was over last September's record-low volumes of 1.099 million -- and with one extra work day last month compared with September 2012.

Despite the year-on-year improvement, the 1.159 million vehicle sales marked the second-lowest level for the month of September in the last decade -- an indication that Europe's auto market is not yet in full recovery. France, Britain and Spain reported sales increases, while new car registrations were down in recession-mired Italy as well as Europe's biggest economy, Germany.

For the first nine months of the year, car sales were down 4 percent.
