ZURICH (AP) -- Voters in Zurich have rejected a plan to build a new football stadium for the city's clubs, in the second major referendum defeat this year for Swiss sport.

City authorities say a vote held Sunday rejected a proposal to extend credit of 216 million Swiss francs ($237 million) to build a 19,000-capacity stadium on the site of Grasshoppers' former home Hardturm.

A previous project to develop a stadium there as a 2008 European Championship venue was blocked by local residents and legal issues.

Zurich authorities say Grasshoppers and FC Zurich will continue to play at the Letzigrund stadium, which was renovated for Euro 2008.

Letzigrund is better known for track for field and will stage the 2014 European Athletics Championships.

In March, Switzerland's proposed bid to host the 2022 Winter Olympics at neighboring St. Moritz and Davos was dropped when voters in Graubuenden canton (state) declined to support it.
