Taipei, Sept. 19 (CNA) Taiwan's government is carrying out a survey on the needs of foreign and Chinese spouses of local citizens as part of its efforts to provide them with improved care and services, the National Immigration Agency (NIA) said Thursday. As of the end of June, there were 480,048 foreign and Chinese spouses in Taiwan, according to data released by the Ministry of the Interior (MOI). NIA Director-General Hsieh Li-kung said the survey aims to better understand their living situation in Taiwan, including matters such as family life, childbearing, parenting, work, medical and health insurance needs. The poll is being conducted in accordance with the MOI's population white paper, which mandates such a survey once every five years for policy formulation, Hsieh said. The survey will collect at least 13,340 valid samples and will be concluded by Oct. 31 but the results will not be released until May 2014, he said. The interviewers will carry identification cards and the information collected will be used only for statistical or analytical purposes, he added. (By Liu Chien-pang and Sofia Wu)
