Taipei, July 20 (CNA) Global shipments of large-sized panels dropped by a monthly 2.5 percent in June due to the slow season effect, according to a local flat screen research institute. WitsView said shipments of large-sized panels totaled 65.95 million units in June, down 2.5 percent from the 67.65 million units sold in the previous month. Jeffy Chen, a research manager at WitsView, attributed the contraction to a traditionally slow season, saying that brands stayed cautious on procurement. Liquid crystal display (LCD) TV panels showed the sharpest decline of 7.7 percent from the previous month to 18.78 million units, while tablets dropped 3 percent to 15.41 million units, Chen said, citing a report by his company. Monitor panel shipments fell 3.9 percent month-on-month in June to 14.02 million units, as some panel makers shifted some capacity to strongly growing mid- and small-sized products, he added. Bucking the trend, notebook panels saw a rebound in June, with shipments totalling 17.74 million units, up 5.4 percent from the previous month, according to the report. Based on WitsView's estimate, July will remain a light season for Chinese brands' restocking, with shipments of TV panels and monitor panels likely to drop slightly. While notebook panel shipments in July are expected to drop 10 percent to 11 percent from June due to some brands' quarter-end financial settlements, new product launches by Apple Inc. and Google Inc. are expected to drive up overall tablet shipments by 20 percent to 25 percent from June, according to WitsView.
