Police say thousands of hardline Islamic activists have blocked roads and cut off the capital, Dhaka, from rest of the country to back their call that the Bangladesh government enact an anti-blasphemy law.

The government in this Muslim-majority nation has rejected the demand, saying Bangladesh is governed by secular liberal laws.

Hefajat-e-Islam, a newly formed group, organized the protest. Thousands of police were deployed, but no clashes have been reported.
