Mayor Mauricio Macri has reached a milestone in his campaign to make Buenos Aires a bike-friendly capital: 100 kilometers (about 62 miles) of dedicated bike lanes and paths.

Macri dutifully wore a helmet and made sure that most of his Cabinet did so as well as they announced the achievement Wednesday during a short ride in the upscale Palermo neighborhood.

The mayor says that by year's end, the city will have another 30 kilometers of bike lanes and 100 stations where residents can rent the city's signature yellow bikes for free. Meanwhile, Banco Ciudad is expanding a program that has enabled 14,000 people so far to buy bikes with zero-interest loans.
