Taipei, Dec. 4 (CNA) Former Assistant Secretary for East Asian and Pacific Affairs under the U.S. Department of State Christopher Hill will soon visit Taiwan to learn more about bilateral ties and Taiwan's policy toward China, a Taiwanese official said Tuesday. Hill, the current dean of the Josef Korbel School of International Studies at University of Denver, will visit Taiwan Dec. 5-10, said Bruce Linghu, director-general of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' Department of North American Affairs, at a news briefing.

The purpose of his visit is to gain a deeper understanding of issues such as the development of Taiwan-U.S. and cross-Taiwan Strait relations, Linghu added. During his visit, Hill is scheduled to meet with President Ma Ying-jeou and government officials in the foreign ministry, the National Security Council and the Mainland Affairs Council, according to the ministry.

Hill served as assistant secretary between 2005 and 2009. He has also served as U.S. ambassador to Iraq, South Korea and Poland. Hill was also named as the head of the U.S. delegation to the six-party talks on North Korea's nuclear issue in 2005. (By Elaine Hou)
