An adviser to Haitian President Michel Martelly says protesters threw bottles at him as he made a visit to the country's second largest city.

Adviser Gregory Mayard-Paul said late Sunday that some people in a crowd of thousands threw bottles at Martelly while he was in Cap-Haitien but the president was not injured.

Privately owned Radio Kiskeya reported that police arrested "several" people for hurling stones and bottles at the president as he walked through the streets.

Haitian police couldn't be immediately reached for comment.

Martelly has struggled to get a government in place since he was sworn in in May. Lawmakers rejected his first pick for prime minister and seem ready to reject his second.
