The Montenegrin government has recognized Libya's main opposition group as the country's legitimate government, in a boost for the rebels fighting Moammar Gadhafi.

Montenegrin government said in a statement on Thursday it was "ready to establish cooperation with the National Transitional Council of Libya."

The move came just days after the United States and some 30 other nations also recognized NTC, as part of efforts to isolate Gadhafi.

Montenegro's government says its decision to recognize NTC was in support of international efforts at solving the crisis in Libya and in line with the U.N. and EU policies.

Montenegro has sought to move closer to the European Union since gaining independence in 2006 from Serbia.
