Tropical storm Aere has lashed the northeastern Philippines, killing at least three people. More than 100,000 villagers fled from towns threatened by landslides.

Officials say the storm slammed into Catanduanes province Sunday with winds of 53 miles (85 kilometers) per hour and gusts of 62 mph (100 kph). It triggered landslides and floods and knocked out power in some towns about a month before the end of the summer vacation season.

Officials say an elderly woman drowned when she tried to cross a swollen river in Daraga town in Albay province while a man was elecrocuted in a flooded village in Libon town, where a boy was also reported missing.

Officials say another man drowned in Carigara town in Leyte province.
