Malaysia: Taipei, Georgetown ink friendship memorandum

Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin signed a memorandum on building friendship with Georgetown, Malaysia yesterday to promote bilateral trade and exchanges in the fields of culture, education and tourism.

The signing ceremony was held at Taipei City Hall, where Hau extended his welcome to Penang State Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, Municipal Council President Patahiyah Ismail and other officials from Georgetown, Penang's capital.

During the ceremony, Patahiyah said Penang will host many international travel and cultural activities between July and November, and she hoped Taipei would send officials to those planned events to gain a better understanding of the Malaysian state.

Under the memorandum, the two cities pledged to promote friendship and cooperation, help each other in efforts to improve local governance and exchange information and experiences in promoting the development of cultural and creative industries.

They also agreed to promote bilateral trade and make efforts to green their cities, according to Taipei City government.
