London, Oct. 19 (CNA) Taiwan won nine gold, 13 silver and two bronze medals at the British Invention Show 2009 that ended Saturday, scoring the highest winning rate among the 17 countries that participated in the exhibition. All 24 entries submitted by Taiwan won prizes at the exhibition, which is the UK's largest innovation and technology expo.
Taiwan's gold medal-winning inventions include an integrated Bluetooth and landline telecommunication system, an artificial translucent stone with pearl luster, an on-vehicle surveillance camera/security mirror, a safe cane for the blind, a ball collecting device and a step-on compression litter bin.
The integrated Bluetooth and landline telecommunication system scored instant marketing success, as British Telephone (BT) placed an initial order worth NT$800 million (US$24.77 million) with its inventor, Cotron Corp., Saturday.
The invention had previously won a gold medal at the 37th International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva in April this year.
The pearl-luster artificial stone drew the attention of British interior designers, who made extensive inquiries with its inventor, Rong Jih Enterprise, during the show.
Meanwhile, all five sets of the on-vehicle surveillance cam/security mirror that were displayed at the exhibition were sold out during the show. The device, which was designed with the hope it would be adopted for use on the London subway, was developed by a research team from National Formosa University in Yunlin County.
Kan Kramer, a serial inventor and founder of the British Inventors Society, praised the exhibits from Taiwan, describing them as "refined and mature." He said of all the interesting and exquisite Taiwanese entries, he personally liked the on-vehicle surveillance cam/security mirror the best.
It was the second time that Taiwanese inventors were taking part in the show, which was held this year Oct. 14-17 in London at Alexandra Palace where the awards were also presented Saturday.
