TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – A tropical depression likely to transform itself into tropical storm Nesat could influence the weather around Taiwan next Friday, the Central Weather Bureau said.

The storm would be the ninth of the season, and would be the first to affect Taiwan in some way.

Tropical storm Sonca was likely to become No.8 on Sunday, emerging from a depression in the South China Sea near the Philippines, but it would head for the Chinese island of Hainan, staying well clear of Taiwan, forecasters said.

At present, there were still three other storms active, with Noru and Kulap moving off Japan’s east coast and Roke expected to make landfall near Hong Kong in China’s Guangdong Province on Monday.

While Nesat was not even a storm yet, it had the potential to turn into one early in the week and to move in Taiwan’s general direction, influencing the island’s weather around July 28, according to the weather bureau.

Meanwhile, on Sunday, thunderstorms were still possible in south, southeast and east Taiwan due to the diminishing influence of tropical storm Roke. Temperatures around the island were expected to reach 33 to 35 degrees Celsius, with 36 degrees possible in Taipei City.
