The Latest: 1 dead in building collapse in Sri Lanka

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) — The Latest on a building collapse in Sri Lanka (all times local):

One person has died and at least 22 were injured after a five-story building under construction in Sri Lanka's capital collapsed Thursday, officials said.

Police spokesman Priyantha Jayakody says those injured in the collapse in Colombo have been sent to hospitals.

Hundreds of soldiers, police and firefighters were searching for anyone who might be trapped inside the building.

Dr. Anil Jasinghe, head of Colombo's main hospital says one person rescued from the rubble died. Jasinghe says the man's respiratory system and heartbeat were not functioning when he was admitted to the hospital and efforts to resuscitate him failed.

The reason for the collapse was not immediately known.
