Law enforcement authorities from Indonesia and Taiwan jointly busted an Internet fraud ring in North Sumatra in Indonesia earlier this week, arresting 76 Chinese and Taiwanese suspects, Indonesian media reported Tuesday.

According to the reports, the suspects included 52 Chinese nationalsand 24 Taiwanese nationals.

Toga Panjaitan, director of the North Sumatra Police's special criminal investigation department, said the ring members pretended to be police officers and prosecutors to extort money from their victims.

They were able to rack up US$1 million in illegal gains every month, he said.

During the raid, the authorities seized laptops, cellphones and other devices.

An initial investigation showed that most of the suspects entered Indonesia on tourist visas.

Indonesian police said they will work with immigration officers to deport the suspects.
