TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – While March 21 usually marks the beginning of spring, northern Taiwan is likely to face temperatures as low as 12 degrees Celsius Sunday morning, weather forecasters said.

A cold air front already made itself felt on Saturday, with rainy weather covering most of the northern part of the island, the Central Weather Bureau said.

However, temperatures were likely to fall even further during the weekend, with 12 degrees the expected minimum in coastal areas of northern Taiwan both on Sunday and Monday morning.

The rain was also likely to spread further south during the weekend, moving from north and central Taiwan into low-lying areas of southern Taiwan during Sunday, forecasters said.

By 4 p.m. Saturday, temperatures in places like Tamshui, New Taipei City, and Zhongli, Taoyuan City, were already hovering around 14 degrees.

To find a more realistic touch of spring, people should have traveled to the South, where temperatures still exceeded 24 degrees in Chiayi, 25 degrees in Tainan, and even reached 27.9 degrees in Kaohsiung at 4 p.m. Saturday, according to the Central Weather Bureau. Noon temperatures in the popular beach destination of Hengchun reached 30 degrees.

Once the weekend over, relatively stable weather with significant differences between day and night temperatures would impose itself.

However, by next weekend, a new cold front would arrive, sending temperatures on a new downward course beginning Friday March 31, according to forecasters.
